What would Google come up with if I researched the brand and the number 2 I wondered? Well, apparently there’s a connection – the two-stroke engine… who knew? Not me!

The Model 125 or S-125 was introduced by Harley-Davidson in 1947 as a 1948 model. The 125 cc two-stroke engine produced three horsepower, which was sent through a three-speed foot-shift transmission. The front suspension used girder forks suspended by large rubber bands, which proved to be problematic because they broke and were unavailable from H.D. after the early 1960s.

A dual seat was an available option but proved to be unpopular, likely because the machine was underpowered for two.

Like most vehicles at the time, the 1949 model was six volt and had a bulb and reflector headlight assembly.

Ten thousand Model S-125s were sold during the first seven months of 1947. Despite largely being ignored by dealers, the 125 gained a large following among young riders, many of whom would go on to ride larger motorcycles.

The rubber-band front suspension was replaced in 1951 by a telescopic fork referred to as "Tele-Glide".

5 DAYS TO GO UNTIL THE LANDMARK CHALLENGE GOES LIVE!
You may well be wondering what happened to the Day 6 countdown… well, I was busy dropping off my Sportie at V Twin for some work, handing over the first two Challenge Packs (to Mr & Mrs Frohawk), then I took out my other half’s bike to try out the forward controls… weird! Then I had a hen do to go to, so apologies, day 6 didn’t happen.
So we jump to Day 5 – what would Google supply me with for that? I was surprised to find that 5 gears didn’t appear in a Harley engine until 1980… read on!
“For more than 50 years, Harley-Davidson riders had to be content with four gears. The company's four-speed transmission design was solid enough to remain virtually unchanged from its introduction in the 1930s until its retirement in the 1980s, but during that half century, many Harley riders wished for one more gear at the top. Eventually their wish came true, with a five-speed gearbox that would stay at the top of Harley's transmission line for over 25 years.
In 1980, Harley-Davidson debuted its FLT Tour Glide model, a 1,300 cc Big Twin touring bike. The FLT introduced several innovations, including a new rubber engine mount system that reduced vibration and a front fork that was mounted behind the steering head. The FLT also featured Harley's first five-speed transmission, which was hard bolted to the bike's engine. This new transmission added the extra gear that Harley riders had wanted for a long time, and the fifth gear increased the bike's top speed while allowing for low ratios in the lower gears”.

Some research reveals the following (I may have googled our brand & the number 7!):

The Harley-Davidson Model 7D of 1911 was the first successful V-twin from Harley Davidson, inaugurating a motorcycle engine configuration that has continued unbroken from the Milwaukee motor company ever since.

In 1909, Harley had made a few examples (27 units) of another v-twin, but the design was flawed and they did not try again until two years later. In 1911, 5,625 Model 7Ds were manufactured. The Model 7D's motor was the F-head IOE engine, in use until 1929. It sold for US$300, which with inflation would be $8333 in today's currency.

Ignition was via a magneto, and the engine was started using bicycle-style pedals. Instead of a conventional clutch, a pulley belt tensioner could be moved, allowing the leather drive belt to slip.
